Fence Staining

what you should know

  • 1. Protection: Staining your fence protects it from moisture and UV damage caused by exposure to the elements. Fences, like all other wood structures are susceptible to rot, warping, cracking, twisting, and loss of color when exposed to moisture and sunlight over time.

    2. Longevity and Durability: Staining your fence can increase its lifespan dramatically. A high quality oil-based stain and sealer soaks into wood, sealing conditioning oils within to prevent the issues stated above and maintain the functionality and aesthetics of the fence from day one.

    3. Aesthetics: Whether you like the look of a new fence or not, it will only look that way for a brief period of time. Wood quickly turns grey when exposed to the sun, giving your one year old fence the appearance that it has seen better days. Staining your fence lets you dictate the color and finish of the fence from day one and for the life of the fence. Staining is a great way to increase your curb appeal, add some color to your outdoor space, or compliment the exterior of your home.

    4. Maintenance: Staining your fence makes maintaining it easier. A quality stain and sealer will repel dirt and grime, preventing build-up of organic growth like mold and mildew, and making it easy to clean with a light wash.

    5. Property Value: A fence is often the first thing people notice when looking at the exterior of a home. A properly stained fence shows potential buyers that you have taken care of your property and assures them that they will not have to worry about replacing the fence anytime in the near future.

  • The age-old suggestion to wait 6 months to a year before staining is mis-leading.

The sooner you can get a stain and sealer on the fence, the better protection you have against warping, splitting and twisting.

The moisture content of your wood structure is what dictates whether or not it is ready to stain. Wood needs to be at or below 13% moisture in order to properly accept a stain and sealer.

Depending on a few factors such as the materials used, the weather, and the location of the fence, most fences can reach the required moisture content within a few weeks of installation.

Here in Alabama it is common to see new fences reach the necessary moisture content and be ready to stain in as little as 2-3 weeks during the summer months.

If you are not sure whether your fence is ready to be stained or not, we will be happy to stop by and check the moisture content with our moisture moisture meter.

If you are looking to stain your fence yourself, you can purchase a moisture meter at any hardware store for around $20.
